Mercedes Benz Wrote:Speedy rescue of accident victims: A new Mercedes-Benz initiative: QR code that can save lives

Stuttgart, May 23, 2013

Stuttgart – When every second counts: with a small yet effective innovation, Mercedes-Benz wants to make the rescue of accident victims safer and swifter. In future a QR code, which can be read by smartphones and tablets, placed on Mercedes-Benz cars, will provide a rescue map for every vehicle type, which can be shown on the device's display. This chart contains all the information necessary to rescue any injured occupants speedily.

This Mercedes-Benz innovation makes use of the rescue sheets developed by the ADAC, the German Automobile Association, and which are already provided by all automakers for every one of their vehicle models. The sheets show firefighters, police and paramedics the design details they need to know in order to use the rescue shears effectively, for example. The rescue sheet, specific for each vehicle type, also informs about the location of the airbags, the battery, the tanks, electric cables, high-pressure cylinders and other components – in the case of hybrid models the location of the additional batteries and high-voltage cables, too. This information can save lives, because in an emergency every action counts and every second is precious.

However, in many cases rescue workers have to do their best without a rescue sheet, either because the driver neglected to carry one in the car, or because the rescuers cannot find it in the car. There are different proposals for the best location for the rescue sheet. Most favour the sun visor.

If there is no rescue sheet on board, then the rescue workers have to identify the accident vehicle with absolute certainty – something that does not always lead to the correct result in the presence of severe accident damage and missing model identification. In such cases only a telephone inquiry based on the number plate can help.

This Mercedes-Benz innovation, on the other hand, offers – in almost all cases – a swift and reliable way to a vehicle-specific correct security identity card – and can do this without requiring any action on the part of the driver. As from this year all new vehicles from Mercedes-Benz will be provided with two stickers with a so-called QR code. This square symbol with black and white sectors is often used by magazines, for instance, to direct readers via internet to a specific web page. Thanks to an app, QR codes can be read by every smartphone and every Tablet equipped with a camera.

The Mercedes-Benz QR codes identify the vehicle reliably, make fundamental information about the vehicle visible immediately and automatically direct to the website with the specific rescue sheet – generally a matter of only a few seconds. In order to make it easy to find the label with the potentially lifesaving QR code, Mercedes-Benz places one on the fuel tank flap and the other on the B-pillar on the opposite vehicle side. For it seldom occurs that both these parts are badly damaged at the same time in an accident, and they are furthermore easily accessible from the outside.

Further benefits of the innovative QR code solution from Mercedes-Benz:
Rescue workers do not need to identify the vehicle themselves and navigate through Internet pages for this.

Suitable for all vehicle types, both with conventional and with alternative drive systems.
The stickers with QR code can be easily retrofitted.

All automakers can continue to update their own rescue sheet links themselves and thus use the QR system to advantage, because Mercedes-Benz has waived the right to a patent registration in order to make the system available to everyone.

I finally installed my Fat Cat coilovers this past weekend. Wow, what a difference in handling. The car corners super flat, there's very little pitch/dive, there's virtually no dive under hard braking and no squat under hard acceleration. Steering response went from very sharp to ultra-razor sharp. The ride? No worse than OEM (theres less bounce, which is quite nice, as well). Fat Cat coilovers are custom built for the customer. The engineers take your car's weight, power, your weight, etc. as well as vehicle usage and your desires for driving dynamics. They then custom valve Bilstein shocks and pair them with spring rates that match what your desires from the vehicle are. The car is riding at about 12.75" all around. I wouldn't go any lower as my front lip would start to scrape pretty badly. I'm aligned to some fairly conservative specs to deliver a good balance for a street/auto-x vehicle:

Front:
Camber -1.3
Caster 8
Toe 1/64

Rear:
Camber -2.3
Toe 1/16

I know there are some of you here with Audi and VW 1.8L turbos so I thought you might want to see. It is an AWP [US] casting and I am porting the intake inlets to the size of an AEB. But it's not just that, I am also enlarging the 3 individual runners from about .750" to .850" in each intake runner/port. Exhaust the customer wanted me to gasket match the port to the header flange. I agreed at first but against my better judgement because porting the floor on the ex port has always lost for me in the past [I dont do it] because it's a low "travel" area. So I contacted someone much more well versed int his than myself and it got fairly technical and you will see the port design I ended up with.[shape]. I found out no only does lower floor make it lazy, porting lower causes the exhaust gases to travel backwards! into the combustion and increases combustion temps.. increasing knock etc..
Many hours more.. grinding.. blending... I'm done "roughing out" intake ports and can start on roughing out ex side as all these need are the many hrs of sanding.. to finish.. loll..

After several hours of "roughing in the intakes"..
Still not happy with the top corners of the intake ports...

Many hours more.. grinding.. blending... I'm done "roughing out" intake ports and can start on roughing out ex side as all these need are the many hrs of sanding.. to finish.. loll..
My question is this: if any of you have driven diesel cars on both the North American and European continents, how much difference does the quality of the diesel make in the car's performance? I know what we have is sludge compared to the euro version...

Now in all reality there are certain things a beetle won't really be able to have, AC and an Auto being in the front of my mind. But the missus and I are aiming to buy a Beetle (73 or older) and I want to get right to making it easier for her to Daily Drive as soon as we get it. Modern brakes and a 12 volt electrical system+stereo are job one.

But after that I'd really like to make the 1600 a more highway friendly motor. As well as upgrade the wheels to something a bit more responsive than the donuts I see on stock beetles. as well as some mild suspension alterations.

there is just SO MUCH info on these cars. Not trying to build a show car or a speed demon. just a quirky daily.

Any advice on reliably modding that 1600? doesn't need to go over 80. but I'd like to get it there a bit easier.

Quote:A convincing argument exists for both cars. The GT-R certainly earns respect for being so spectacularly dominant at speed, but it neglects the subtle but hugely enjoyable elements of driving a car. It sees the apex, but misses the road. The R8 has depth. Its ease of use and comfort mean you could drive it every day, and yet that functionality doesn't impede the fun when you drive it fast. Crucially, though, and unlike with the Nissan, you don't have to be at the absolute limit to enjoy it. The R8 wins, not because it's more refined and sounds and looks better, but because, simply, we all want to keep driving it.

Hello again!

It has been a while since my first/last postings, I have been somewhat of a distant forum member, but now the departing of my older mercedes after an untimely transmission death brings me to the new weekend/not work car. Now somewhere in my head is a space reserved for odd-out cars, and when this santorin blue on cream/black (my favorite atmosphere) A4 Avant flashed past my eyes I just had to take a closer look, and did I ever! The small dealership that had the car tried to sell it for a profit but the problems with the car drove everyone away, the main thing was the grungy overall look and after moving the car 10 feet the very obvious rear suspension damage, as well as none of the everyday power accessories working, locks, windows, speedometer, fuel gauge and so on. So I took the car on a drive well aware of some of the drawbaks of poorly maintained Audi's of this age. Plain and simple these cars need regular work or else it piles up and costs a fortune to get right, leading me to the purchase. After my 5 minute test drive while standing talking to the salesman the car decided to puke out its coolant supply when shut off, my first thought, bad water pump/clogged dual valve thermostat, more on this later. All of the sudden my bargaining power went right up! I bought the car for a fraction of what the dealer wanted (they knew what a massive commitment this was going to require to fix), honestly until it puked I was going to walk away. I somehow lost the original dealer lot photos of the car so stay with me when you see this.... get ready if you don't know how to work on these cars....

This was a few days to a week after purchase, the engine and drivetrain is shoved very far forward to fit everything in, and work that would be considered not bad on regular cars is thrown out the window with these! So what your looking at is getting ready to do a timing belt and cooling system rebuild. Turns out the timing belt and pretty much everything else under the hood was factory, very bad sign for a car that was begging to have a major service at 80-90k, this car currently has 158k, you get the idea, bad, bad things happening. But enough blabbing, this is a awesome car. I worked for a local dealer around my area when this car was new giving me a liking for this model and it has every option I wanted, with the exception of sport seats.
Bad scope for image but the paint color and interior shades really stand out, this thing is a customer-request freakshow and I love it.
The body needs work, but it is not bad general dent repair and painting should have it looking good once the front end is back together. Looks like someone keyed the rear door here...

Damage to pass fender
The passenger side doors have been repainted previously and I noticed some rust forming by the edge of the rub trim on the front, pulled the strip off and found this bondo/rust nightmare underneath sad thing is the crappy (in prep work) bondo job and grinding to even out a small crease could have been avoided by just filling it in conservatively and painting the door.
Anyhow there are several things I could add to this, but it is late and they can wait for later. More to come on what needs fixed and why later on. The laundry list of less than satisfactory items is huge, and I will post it tomorrow, as well as the parts/repairs needed

Say you just met a guy, and he agrees to pick you up at 7. You haven't seen his car before, so the "first impression" is coming up quickly. What car would make your heart sink upon arrival?

For me, it's the Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Nothing says "douche" to me quite like this car. It's a POS in every sense of the word, except it is also trying so hard to be cool because it is a convertible. And since it's a convertible, you're on public display for your doucheyness. Now don't get me wrong, I actually think it's very cute when a guy doesn't know squat about cars... But the purchase of a Sebring is a sign of genuinely low brainpower (and low class, to boot).
