HPDE events - ANYONE in here do it?
So I'm tired of talking about hitting the track and I am totally going to do a NASA event at Sebring end of March!
Anyone else in here do it? I didn't think it would be this expensive ($429 + $50 for NASA membership) - but its going to be fun. HPDE I (with instructor in car) is what I'm doing. Its a two day event. I am trying to make sure the Z is ready - I am going to order a set of TOYO R888s, as well as an oil cooler and bigger radiator. Also looking at making a custom heatshield (I/E same side L series - WORST DESIGN EVAR!!) - and/or turbo blanket. The rollcage/Brides/harnesses were suppose to go in last month, but I'm still waiting on my 80MM Defi tach/shift light/RPIs - figure if the dash is coming out and all the wiring is being redone do it all at once. It should be here within the next few weeks. |

HPDE Events with NASA are very fun you will really learn a lot. Also look around for other groups you can run with that dont have such a large membership fee etc.
However I would not recommend you start out with Toyo R888 (R Compound tires) unless you have tracked before and have experience. Their breakaway point is ever small, meaning they dont squeal or "talk to you" when they are about to break loose, then you spin out lol. If you decide to run them anyways go for it, however I would recommend that you get a set of Kumho XS', you can find them for pretty cheap if you look around and they work pretty well on track and you will get much more life out of them than a set of R888's. I am currently running 15x7s and the car is making upwards of 300RWHP/300TQ - on 205/215s, I think R Comps is the only way to go. At 14psi I have NO traction in first/most of second. I was leaning towards the R888s because they are supposidely louder and harder than the Azenis RT615K and Yoko Advans A048s (or whatever it is they're offering now) - not to mention much cheaper... My major concern however isn't tires at all - its cooling. The car vapor locks like a mother when left standing after a hard drive and its in DIRE need of a valve adjustment. I really hope I can get all of this stuff done in time. The 50/50 (must look good at 50ft@50mph) thing is kind of BS - I'm scrambling to find an airdam/new fenders - even then, half of the car is going to primer... UGHHHGH. This would have been so much easier in my S2000. LOL. |

RE: HPDE events - ANYONE in here do it?
Well, your problem is that you have pizza cutter sized tires behind the beast, that weighs under 2,800 lbs.
R-Comps have a stiff stiff sidewall and a softer outer compound so I dont think it will completely fix your traction issue. If you have 15x7's on there you should be running a 225/45 or a 225/50 In my opinion. I think if you went with the Kumho's with a 225 on all four corners you would be in good shape, and get more than just 2-3 HPDE events on the R Comps. They are only good for a few heat cycles anyways. - 2006 Evolution MR SE - 2004 OZ Rally Lancer - 1973 Datsun 240z |
